Nenagh College Student honoured with Bronze Medal

Leanne Ryan, a second year student at Nenagh College and a native of Templederry was recently awarded a Bronze medal following her participation in the World Raquetball championships in The Dominican Republic. Leanne trained almost seven days a week in the months leading up to the championships. As part of the national squad her training schedule took her to all four corners of Ireland for training in stamina, fitness and court play. Leanne continued to play with Templederry throughout this time and committed to school and club camóige teams. After a long Journey to the Dominican Republic via Paris Leanne had a few days to acclimatise to the very different weather conditions with the searing heat and different court and ball conditions. Together with her playing partner, Mary Ellen Phelan, Leanne faced the challenge of playing Canada, Ecuador, Mexico, USA and the Dominican Republic over five days. When all the points accrued from these encounters were totalled the girls finished in a very creditable 3rd place in the world, a magnificent achievement given the climatic conditions which were not such an obstacle for their opponents. The staff and students of Nenagh College acknowledged Leanne’s wonderful achievement at a specially convened school assembly upon her return.

Nenagh College Talent Show

On Tuesday 8th December the annual school Talent Show was held in Nenagh College.  All years in the school were represented on stage again this year and the standard of performance was very high.  We would like to thank the judges on the night – Erica Flanagan, James McGrath and Natasha Sinclair.  They were faced with the challenging task of awarding first second and third places.  Eventually, they decided on Sarah Hickey, First Place, for I Dreamed a Dream from Les Miserables, Shannon Cawley, Second Place, Dancing in the Sky and Chantelle Hickey, Third Place, The Climb.  Thanks to all staff and students who worked so hard to put this together.  We would also like to thank Jim McLoughney who again this year suited our MC so smartly.

St Vincent de Paul Appeal

Last week Ms. Carey’s T.Y class had a bake sale at the Christmas concert on December 8th. We raised over 120 euro and put half of this into the T.Y. fund and used the rest to buy food for the St. Vincent de Paul appeal. On December 14th Ms. Carey gave the class four euro each to buy food. We went to Tesco at 2 o’clock and bought various types of food including cereal, sweets, biscuits, selection boxes, soups and many more. We then returned to school put the food we bought into St Vincent de Paul box in our canteen and had our picture taken.

Camóige at Nenagh College

Nenagh College were presented with their new jerseys by Deirdre Hughes – A Sportsman’s Dream and former Nenagh Vocational School and Tipperary Camogie All-Star on Tuesday 24th November.  Deirdre also featured on the Camóige Team of the Century. A Sportsman’s Dream kindly gave sponsorship towards the jerseys for this up and coming camóige  panel.  So far this year they have represented the school on a number of occasions with great heart, pride in their school and determination to succeed in the U16 ½ Blitz, the 1st and 2nd Year Blitz and the 1st Year Blitz.

Speaking afterwards, Deirdre recounted her memories of playing in school, the camaraderie, the friendships formed and the fun of playing with your friends and getting to represent your school in competitions – the rivalry that exists between club teams that is put to the side when the school jersey goes on.  Deirdre remembered winning some Vocational School Munster Championships and succeeding in being an All-Ireland finalist one year – the whole school went to Cavan to support the team.

Deirdre said that in all the games she has played, games won and lost, that she ranks the school matches and wins up there with her successes at county and All-Ireland level.  She hopes that the current panel of players will enjoy the camaraderie, playing the game and forging new friendships.  Camogie in post-primary school is another of the foundation stones for future county camogie players.  Deirdre, on behalf of A Sportsman’s Dream wishes them the best of luck and looks forward to supporting them when matches resume in 2016.
