Our first-year boys soccer team had their first outing of the year today. We were drawn away against a much-fancied Scoil Ruain Killenaule side. After a cagey start from both sides Scoil Ruian took the lead after a fine counter attack. Nenagh quickly levelled after some excellent work down the wing resulted in a great cross from Ethan Connolly being cleared by the defence, but only as far as Cian Kinsella, who with a wonder strike into the top corner brought the sides level.
Scoil Ruian grew into the game more and were rewarded with a goal halfway through the first half. Nenagh fought back very hard and toward the end of the half won a corner. After a great delivery Caleb Maher couldn’t be stopped after finding a yard of space and firing the sides back level just before the break.
The second half was a very even battle with both teams creating chances. The best of which fell to the home side when they rattled the crossbar with a freekick from distance.
The superior fitness of the Nenagh College boys told deep into the second half when a fine knock on from Tomás McKenzie Cleary found Filip Wiewiora in space behind the back line. After some great work at the end line, he fired a low cross which was finished by Ethan Connolly.
A great result away from home. The boys will play Newport college in the next round.
